Hip Replacement Surgery

Meet Elway, an energetic young Golden Retriever with a bum hip.

After a romp in the park Elway developed a limp. Elway was examined by his regular veterinarian who recommended a consult with one of our surgeons. Radiographs revealed severe hip dysplasia, with subluxation (poor seating of the ball and socket of the hip) and joint remodeling with arthritis. Elway's sweet demeanor did not betray how much pain he was in.

Elway's dad, Rod, did his research and weighed the options. It seemed the best way to go was to perform a total hip replacement (THR), and take advantage of the latest technology using the Zurich cementless procedure.

Cementless THR typically results in better long-term outcomes and animal comfort because of a reduced possibility of infection, loosening and flexibility in revision of the implant if ever required.

Elway flashes a smile for his dad, Rod, during post-op recovery.
The surgeon checks Elway's progress at 4 weeks. He's doing very well.
Before: Note how the hip joint (left) does not fit into the socket as well as the opposing side.

Elway's prognosis for a pain-free life is excellent.
