Robert A. Taylor, DVM, MS, DACVS
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Robert Taylor was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico and, following the end of WWII, his family moved to rural South Texas. At age 14 he decided on a career as a veterinarian and had a plethora of both domestic and wild animals as pets. Notable animals were: Charro, a pet javelina, Zorro, a fox, and a two-headed calf.

Following graduation from Crystal City High School, he attended Southwest Texas Junior College for the summer and Colorado State University in the fall. After two years at CSU he returned to Texas and enrolled at Texas A&M, earning a B.S. degree and D.V.M. degree in 1970. He graduated on the 11th of August and reported for active duty in the U.S. Air Force on the 13th. He was the Base Veterinarian at Lowry AFB and had an office staff of eight. His duties there included operating the Base Veterinary Clinic, care of the sentry dogs, and many public health duties.

In the fall of 1971 he began to offer after-hours surgery at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital. In 1972 following completion of his military duties he joined AEVH full time. In 1973 a decision was made to make AEVH a 24-hour facility and he spent many long hours attending to the 24-hour practice. In 1975 he was accepted into the graduate surgical program at CSU and obtained an MS in surgery in 1977. In 1985 he was granted diplomat status in the American College of Veterinary Surgery. The hospital has grown from an initial team of three to some 200 staff members.

Dr. Taylor was an early teacher and innovator in canine arthroscopy and organized the first Canine Arthroscopy meeting in 1988. He has taught over 500 veterinarians both basic and advanced arthroscopy.

After 36 years what is Dr. Taylor doing currently? He is involved in several unique orthopedic and non-invasive procedures. Notably he has implanted the first biological in-growth prosthesis in a dog and has plans for including 10 more patients. He is involved in stem cell research and its applications in clinical cases. He continues to be an active teacher of veterinary surgery, performs surgery for zoo and wild animal species, and is active in the community. He has been the treasurer for both the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and the ACVS Foundation for the past 10 years and has been an active member of the Denver Zoological Board of Directors for the past 10 years.
