Ryan P. Cavanaugh, DVM, DACVS


Dr. Ryan Cavanaugh was raised in Baltimore, MD but traveled out West to attend Northern Arizona University where he majored in Zoology and Chemistry. After graduation, Dr. Cavanaugh worked as an equine anesthetist at a referral hospital in the heart of Arizona horse country.

Dr. Cavanaugh attended veterinary school at Colorado State University and upon graduation, was selected for an internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Upon completion of his internship, Dr. Cavanaugh was recognized among 30 other attending veterinarians by receiving the prestigious "Intern of the Year" award.

After his internship, Dr. Cavanaugh remained at the Animal Medical Center to complete a 3 year residency in small animal surgery. Research during his residency concentrated on the use of sophisticated feeding tube technology that is utilized to provide nutrition to both critically ill humans and animals.

Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Cavanaugh pursued advanced surgical training by accepting a 1 year post doctoral fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine. With this training, Dr. Cavanaugh is now one of 30 specialist surgeons in the world with this type of advanced veterinary education. In addition to general soft-tissue, orthopedic and neurologic procedures, his training allows for the aggressive surgical management of all types of cancer.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Cavanaugh can be found out and about in the CO wilderness as well as enjoying the diverse music scene the region has to offer. He also enjoys spending time at home with his family, as well as his two cats (Nora & Sugar) and dog (Tie).
