Richard Hurt, DVM

Dr. Richard Hurt is originally from the east coast of Florida and studied chemistry at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. While conducting post-graduate chemistry work at Rice University in Houston, he became a volunteer at the Houston Humane Society - the source of his 3 dogs. It was a chance meeting with an injured swallow while traveling through Italy that inspired him to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. In 2005, Dr. Hurt graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. After completing a small animal rotating internship, he spent three years working in both general practice and emergency medicine, and has spent considerable time working at animal shelters as a spay/neuter surgeon. His primary interests are in surgery and pain management. He particularly enjoys orthopedic surgery. Dr. Hurt is very excited to be a surgical intern at VCA Alameda East, and would like to pursue a surgical residency next year.

Although a beach lover at heart, he is looking forward to spending some time skiing and biking in the Colorado mountains. He is also a car enthusiast and has been known to rebuild engines and modify transmissions.
