Nutrition Center

“Bonkers” gets a DEXA scan that provides a scientifically based baseline for body mass composition.
With obesity becoming an increasing problem among our pets, Alameda East Veterinary Hospital has invested in another “first”: a DEXA scanner that measures body mass composition including bone density and body fat analysis. With an initial reading and body condition score, a customized nutritional recommendation and exercise program is determined for optimal well-being of the pet. The seriously obese dog may board in our upscale Animal Lodge™ for initial in-patient treatment and clinical supervision. The nutrition center combines the talents of veterinarians, canine nutritional advisors and canine rehabilitation therapists with technology for optimal, life-long health.

Carol Rosenfield, CVT, and certified nutritional advisor, interprets Bonker’s scan.
Our fitness and nutrition experts consider body condition score, a rating of obesity based on body fat percentage from a DEXA scan and a visual review. On a scale of 1 to 5, a “3” is optimal, with “5” being morbidly obese. What is your pet’s body condition score? Make an appointment with our Nutritional Advisor and find out!
Case study: Star
Star’s morbid obesity was threatening her life. She was so overweight that simple spay surgery was too risky until she could shed a few pounds. She was not having luck losing weight at home. So Star participated in a six-week-long, in-patient “Fitness Camp” at Animal Lodge™. After blood tests ruled out any underlying medical condition that could be responsible for her “full figure”, proper nutrition, a DEXA scan, and workout programs began.
Our expert team of veterinarians, physical rehabilitation therapists and our nutritional advisor performed their magic. The result? A shiny coat, trim figure, and improved health status. (Our only other question? When can HUMANS participate??)

Star's poor nutrition was illustrated by her obesity and poor coat condition. |
Our "full-figured gal" gets her initial DEXA scan. She lost half her body fat and
maintained lean muscle mass on our program. |
Star Sends Us a Letter
When it comes to dieting, keeping the pounds off can be as hard as shedding them.
Six months after Star’s fitness camp we heard from her:
“…After spending six weeks at your ‘doggie spa’, I was the picture of health at 56
pounds. You will be proud of me, I have kept my weight off…I’ll close by
sending a big thank you for saving my life and having faith in me. I’m healthy,
happy and living the life that every Lab should have….”
