Veterinary Specialists: Neurology
Oncology
A board certified veterinary oncologist is a veterinary internal medicine specialist who has also obtained additional training in oncology. A veterinary oncologist has specialized knowledge in the diagnosis of cancer, the staging of tumors, the development of treatment plans, and the administration of chemotherapy. When your pet is faced with cancer, a veterinary oncologist will typically work in concert with your pet’s general practitioner in order to obtain the best possible medical outcome for your pet. Some treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. These therapies are typically not available through general practitioners, so your family veterinarian will often work with an oncologist to develop a treatment plan.
Board certification in oncology is granted through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and requires rigorous training. Diplomates in internal medicine complete three to six years of advanced training including a residency, and pass an examination. Further training in oncology is required and candidates sit for a second, more intensive exam.
Our oncologist works as a team with our radiologists, surgeons, internal medicine specialists, and of course, your regular family veterinarian. Our team includes one of thirty specialist surgeons in the world with a post doctoral fellowship in surgical oncology.
